I went to Marginalia Website Explorer and among the first 100 random sites were four sites of guys I know. Consider this: 0 sites of gals I know, 4 sites of guys I know. Why? How? It is a mystery.

Marginalia's Website Explorer is a treasure hunting tool, though, y'all should check it out if you haven't explore.marginalia.nu/view

@nina_kali_nina Nah, many girls are just interested in other things.
An acquaintance of mine works in a tech company as a web-developer.
And she mentions sometimes her team consists of nine guys and one girl.

@rtlc @nina_kali_nina Please be careful with self-fulfilling prophecies.

Plenty of IT pioneer were women, but they disappeared the moment that IT became a well-paid, relatively high-status job.

Women are being bounced away from tech education and jobs because of systemic factors and saying "girls are just interested in other things" will only further entrench these factors.

@forse @rtlc incidentally, I know a handful of brilliant women who are extremely skilled at IT/coding/etc but aren't touching engineering because it's toxic as heck. :( it's depressing to the point where I sometimes consider leaving the industry. Perhaps, it's even a question of "when" and not "if".

@nina_kali_nina @rtlc Sorry about that. =(

FWIW at my company we've been pushing to change both the culture and our hiring process (for example, we blind the reviews of code challenges) and I think it's making at least a bit of difference.

Another local company that has been doing this for much longer (and much harder than us) managed to get close to 50/50 ratio of boys to girls in tech roles. A (male) friend of mine told me it was the best job environment he's ever been.
