btw if you're planning on protesting a talk, the easiest way is to pull the fire alarm

and if you're at fosdem, you can say "i just saw a vape cloud i guess" if anyone asks why

@tef

The issue is that it puts the event at risk, and falsely alerting the authorities gives you a fine.

It would also jeopardize the rest of the schedule.

Quiet public

@Foxboron @tef If you actually _protest_ something, an action is involved. Otherwise its just soapboxing.

If the organizers are concerned about the schedule, there is a easy way to prevent disruption.

Guy has blocked me so I can't see replies.

I will be protesting and attending the sit in, make no mistakes.

However I draw the line at jeopardizing the entire FOSDEM event because of this.

Quiet public

@kevingranade @Foxboron I think the organizers saw $$$ and didn't think about the consequences, which is weird for people who work in FOSS.

@miah @kevingranade

FOSDEM does not sell talk slots to sponsors. They have been consistent about this for over 20 years.

This talk was most likely pushed through by someone from the content team.

Quiet public

@Foxboron @kevingranade Maybe somebody in the content team saw some $$ then. Its strange that anything related to Bitcoin, or Jack would even be at such a event. The both seem to go very against the FOSS world I grew up in.

@miah @Foxboron ehh people that work in FOSS are mostly the same as people working elsewhere. There's some perception that convention operation is only worked on by people passionate about that specific thing, but it's morphed into a weird sponsor-dominated industry just like lots of other things. It might hold true for "fan-scale" conventions, but once a lot of money is moving around a lot of money is moving around and that can attract people with more opportunistic goals, the same can happen with charities.
