My best friend is responsible for both of these. The #acousticcoupler modem works (150baud) though it needs a few capacitors replaced.
@pfriedma totally practical idea: an acoustic coupler modem that would accept a modern smartphone so you can retrocompute on the go (not sure what modern voice compression algorithms would do for the connection, though!)

Funny enough, if I turn my phone volume up loud enough, it will work as is. I've got an asterisk voip set-up with extensions that emulate bell102. One number opens BBC in 'wc', for example.
@pfriedma oh cool! I guess modern phones are much louder than the ones that the couplers were originally designed for
