Speaker Mike Johnson arriving at the Capitol on Tuesday. Late last year, he refused to accept a funding extension that would run through September, insisting on a mid-March deadline that would allow President Trump to put his stamp on federal spending after taking office.
The New York Times · House GOP Passes Spending Bill to Avert Government ShutdownBy Catie Edmondson

@Nonilex Here's the problem... we're screwed either way. If the bill goes through, all kinds of nasty things happen but hopefully those can be argued in court.

If the bill *doesn't* pass and the government shuts down, Trump will declare DOGE an emergency function and Musk can continue rampaging through agencies with nobody in the buildings to oppose him.

We've seen what he's doing, imagine how fast he'll move if nobody is there to kick sand in his face.

@Shdwdrgn @Nonilex a bit like arguing that it's an emergency function to optimize the engine's fuel use when there's no gas in the tank

They'll try, but it sticks out for what it is and can be fought in court

The alternative is to effectively ratify the lawbreaking so far and leave precedent that this is fine. And by the way, the way they're allowing the President more control over tariffs is to redefine the meaning of a day

Think a little on how that could be abused…
