Keeping your files backed up and in order is a lot of work and I find it easy to put off the task to a later time.
But, today I'm going to back up my kindle books. I want to be able to read them, and more importantly share them in the future.
I'm glad that for most books that I really love I bought a hard copy AND the digital version.
Untangling myself from Amazon has been tricky. I used to shop on there every week. No longer. I still listen to some audible books but I'm phasing that out.
@futurebird Tell us please, if you succeeded! I read the description of problems with de-drm-ing and it was long ...
@NatureMC
I have been stripping the DRM off .azw for conversion to epub for years
Every few years the big A changes the scheme, and after a few months someone cracks it. Currently, books published in 2025 have new encryption that hasn't been cracked (that I'm aware of... haven't bought many new books from them)
@futurebird
@DelilahTech This is my problem, I didn't do it for years. I'll tell it, if it worked. @futurebird
@DelilahTech Just did my library (I have had the timing of always deciding to do this right when they put in a new impediment) It worked this time. Will check if it works on something ordered new.
@DelilahTech Got a book 2 days ago, and I just used my Calibre set-up. It worked.
@GeoWend
Nice! Now I just have to find that one new book I bought...
... and figure out who my fav authors will be selling through
@DelilahTech
I connected mine up, and looked for the book to add to library. It worked fine. (Do not forget to switch to library tab...or you will stress when you hit the book while in your physical kindle library and find there is still DRM...like I did several times (chagrined look).
@DelilahTech @NatureMC @futurebird I wish I’d been doing that with Audible (part of Amazon). Last night I discovered the first Expanse book is somehow no longer in my library so I had to re-purchase it. :(
@mkb
Amazon has done that to me, as well
All the more reason to strip DRM and archive your purchases
Do you have the tools for the conversion?
@NatureMC @futurebird
@DelilahTech @NatureMC @futurebird No, so far it hasn’t been enough of a pain point for me to investigate. Are there particular tools you recommend?
@mkb
I use aax2mp3, though I actually create mp4 files with it
https://sourceforge.net/projects/aaxtomp3/
@NatureMC @futurebird
@mkb
I don't have that series... I watched the show and read the first book...
I'm awfully short on sci-fi audiobooks, though; are they good? Who's the reader?
@NatureMC @futurebird
@DelilahTech @NatureMC @futurebird Jefferson Mays is the reader and he is great. The books and show diverge in some ways. Both are great. If you dive further into the books, be sure to hit the novellas as well.
