where @reconditerose is speaking about how to build a sustainable community around a fork, going from Redis to Valkey. Also celebratory Valkey birthday cupcakes!

Lucas Käldström and Alex Zenla spoke about their journeys working in tech and open source as teenagers through today (they’re both just in their 20s!). Thanks to RedMonk for convening this gathering, and looking forward to today — including giving my talk at 11am.

A quick look back on yesterday, my first : A great slate of mind-expanding talks, from @geekygirldawn’s feudalism and power analysis of rug-pulling and forks to Michael Coté’s attempts to play Dungeons and Dragons with GenAI.

Apparently airline travel bookings from Canada to the US for summer travel are down 75% over this time last year.

You read that right. Seventy-five percent. That's just shy of a million bookings:

March 2024: 1,218,570 bookings
March 2025: 295,982 bookings

WHOA....

NYT: "The U.N. has advised all of its employees who work at its New York headquarters, as well as their family members, to carry U.N. identification cards and a copy of their passport page that contains their visa, because they are at risk of being stopped by immigration officials, according to a copy of an email seen by The New York Times."

Apparently when you travel to the US, free speech is not allowed. Vance comments in Europe about freedom and free speech sound more hollow then ever before.
"The tactics have unnerved foreign tourists and sent a chill through immigrant communities in the United States, who say they are being targeted for speech — not for breaking any laws."

Pedestrians crossing into California from Mexico through the San Ysidro port of entry last year. In a string of recent cases, visitors trying to enter the United States reported being turned back or detained.

A question for my friends who are #trans and/or #menopausal and/or anyone dealing with hormones, #hrt and related supplements. I’m preparing an opt out post on data sovereign period trackers for those who menstruate and would like to include ideas for hormone tracking too. Which apps or systems do you use? What is needed in this space?

Comments or DMs welcome. This post will be deleted in a few days to ensure safety.

(Edit: A note that I appreciate and fully respect that trans people and menopausal people are often (although not always) members of very different groups and I do not wish to confuse populations or identities. In this instance I just want to reach anyone whose everyday expertise requires careful, expert, or experimental management of synthetic or bioidentical hormones. My apologies in advance if this causes any confusion or concern. ❤️)

I'll be in London next week and speaking at 2025! When I saw that the theme this year is “Sustaining Software Development Craft,” it was my chance to put together a talk about and how it's become so important to modern software development and digital infrastructure... Like sewers and roads are essential for the physical side of today's societies. I'm really looking forward to sharing what I've discovered about sewers and software and who pays for them with the @sovtechfund

Tickled to see the @travisbaldree’s “Legends & Lattes” and “Bookshops & Bonedust” in the original as well as translated into German in my local store. I think the German versions of the titles are nice too!
