@terrain possibly controversial opinion but i think that

1
/ 3

is actually somewhat defensible. it’s certainly not a good idea for something this short, but if you have longer expressions on either side it makes it easier to read “we’re dividing something by something else” without taking up an entire line for just the /

@aprzn hm, okay! I can actually see this being a good reason for it being able to format like that. I would actually write similar code myself in that case.

it looks ridiculous in this case, but I think the intent may be "don't collapse if the developer already showed that they want it on multiple lines; but don't let the operator take a single line either". and that's not something I realized was happening, because to me the line breaks were not conveying any intent; they were a means to an end of getting the formatters to wanna do something, anything.

ultimately, for such a short example, there probably should be some heuristic to collapse it anyways? but you're right. I can actually see why Alejandra makes this decision. I will amend the post soon(tm) acknowledging that this isn't universally worse.

@aprzn I'VE UPDATED THE POST!

I basically wrote a whole another blogpost in place of what was previously a snarky comment. I managed to sneak in a life lesson in it kinda. it should maybe be a separate page? but I didn't do that lol.

I also added more headers. the tie in to the next section is reworded but otherwise the rest of the contents are unchanged. go reread that section!

@terrain quite the diversion lol
