What language do you toot/post in the most?
Do you write and read Toots mostly in the same language or do you stick to one language or mix it up;
If you use a different language for different topics or day time i would be curios to know

@danielle@tech.lgbt mostly English but i have been known to shitpost in Romanian on occasion. some puns or concepts just don't translate.
@danielle English, because our language was forbidden after Culloden
@Clutha is a great flag to fly. And I can understand why you'd feel strongly about the history of language suppression in Scotland
Do you speak Scottish Gaelic or Scots?
@danielle
‘Scots’ is mingled with English where I was born and grew up in Glasgow. Huge amalgam of Highland Scots & Irish there.
Stories of children being beaten in school if they spoke Gaelic are heartbreaking.
Even ‘Scots’ was frowned upon. If you wanted a good job you had to speak the ‘Queens English’
My sister who was a very clear speaker was sent to elocution lessons when she joined the BBC the early 60’s!
@Clutha It's heartbreaking to hear that children have been punished for speaking Gaelic and the pressure to conform to the 'Queen's English' is a sad reminder of the oppression of minority languages.
Thank you for sharing your story.
I'm curious: what do you think has changed in Glasgow and Scotland as a whole since then?
Are there more opportunities now for people to speak and learn Scots and Gaelic?
Are there any initiatives or programs to promote and preserve these languages?
I'm so grateful for people like you who help keep the Scottish language and culture alive.
@danielle
We have Gaelic schools in Glasgow now, the first one was over subscribed almost as soon as it opened. Gaelic music is very popular too all over the country.
My wife & I were doing a motorbike trip up the Outer Hebrides, on one of the ferries a squad of youngster came into the small lounge and got instruments out, I thought wild pop music was going to start, wrong.
They were travelling thru all the islands playing & singing Gaelic material. I didn’t want the voyage to end.

Female Gaelic singing tugs at the heart strings & the violin & guitar music matched the atmosphere perfectly.
I’ve tried a few language courses but never found one that inspired me. I’m a poor student, but pick practical stuff up quickly. (Retired marine engineer)
@danielle English mostly, with a bit of French in between and very rare Italian. But this is mostly related to what I get in my feed/what makes the fediverse/communities that migrated.
@danielle post mostly in English but read Welsh and some German and French
Helo @JeniParsons Thanks for answering
By the way, I find Welsh a really fascinating language, glad to hear you're using it !
@danielle I generally post in my native German, but when replying to or otherwise interacting with a different-language toot, I normally switch to that toot's language (like here) to make it easier for the rest of the readers to follow the thread.
@deBaer Thank you for your reply
@danielle In my case, it really depends on the topic... sometimes also a little on the audience it is meant for, of course. But honestly, I'm not posting in the variety of languages I'd wish to do. German is really dominant in my posts...
@sustainrelease Danke für Deine Antwort. Ich bin überrascht, wie viele Deutsch antworten. Ich hätte es nicht erwartet.
Liest Du lieber Deutsch oder Englisch ?
In welchen weiteren Sprachen würdest Du gerne posten?
@danielle Writing Belarusian by the most part.
Reading English by the most, while also could read Spanish, Polish, Ukrainian
