i like how "illegal in the EU" means it probably violated a human right and "illegal in florida" means it probably is a human right

Public

@chrisisgr8 Depends on how the Chat Control fights goes, but close enough.

Public

@chrisisgr8 unless it's the human right of safe passage for asylum seekers and Global South migrants, someone the EU is happy to let die in the Mediterranean or on other militarised borders.

Public

@Feders_dub @chrisisgr8

Or wearing non-Christian religious clothes, preparing meat your way, having Downs' Syndrome, born statelessness, creating statelessness, living near the people you want, on and on...

But yeah, other than that...

Thing is, it's super easy to point out that Florida is a dangerous state targeting vulnerable people for harassment and death without venerating Europe as some bastion of human rights.

Public

@Feders_dub @chrisisgr8 I understand the original post points out the differences. And yes, EU allows migrants to die or murders them directly... Same as US. Both are criminals on this regard.

Quiet public

@chrisisgr8 sometimes illegal in Florida is something like “Florida Man turns himself in for murdering imaginary friend” or something

@kaitlynethylia

A similar thing happens with "criminal speech in Brazil" vs "free speech in the USA".

Here racist or queerphobic insults and speech can land you in jail. Plus you can get hefty fines for promoting discrimination.

Quiet public

@chrisisgr8 eu still murders refugees though,,

Public

@chrisisgr8 Yeah. My family were originally going to move to Florida. We ended up moving to the EU instead, pretty much for that reason

Public

@chrisisgr8 As others have noted with pointed examples, that's not entirely true. At least not right now.

Hopefully, we can get both jurisdictions to the point where "illegal" = violates human right(s). If we're careful, lucky and brave enough...it might even happen in our lifetimes.

Public

@chrisisgr8 so, this is how I learn that the EU bans saving drowning migrants

Public

@chrisisgr8
I wish it was as simple as that.

Public

@chrisisgr8 sometimes it makes me feel like it’s better to live in the EU. But I’m not sure

Public

@chrisisgr8

I always knew polyamorous anthro-crocodilian relationships were a human right.

Calling you out

Public

@chrisisgr8 And one of the exceptions is buying a product from a small business outside the EU that can't yet afford to hire an article 27 #GDPR representative.

Public

@chrisisgr8 I hate it. But that's because I have family in Florida.

Public

@chrisisgr8
I think we need a GRAU complement to GRAS. I'm not sure if "Generally Recognized As Unsafe" is best applied to foods, or countries.

Public

@chrisisgr8 And "Banned in Virginia" just means it's pornography.

Public

@chrisisgr8 convenient mnemonic device

Public

@chrisisgr8 @KayJanes Oh you like our government, do you? (I’d like to pee in DeSantis’ shoe, Hissssssssssssss )

Public

@chrisisgr8
I mean it is kind of convenient, but I really don't like it.
