@Tsutsuku @krishean @chrisisgr8 2026: Fungus party! Woo! I'm a' capture me some carbon. All. Post-Anthropocene Era. Long.

Public

@Tsutsuku @krishean @chrisisgr8 As Adams noted: “There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.”

Public

@4d3fect @krishean @chrisisgr8
I find it hard to believe that the Universe is "for" anything or has a reason. It just kinda is.

Public

@Tsutsuku @4d3fect @krishean @chrisisgr8

It’s funny you say this. It’s what I’ve believed since I was a kid. I think my Catholic upbringing pushed me in that direction.

I began to suspect the nuns in Catechism were full of it when I wanted to know how they knew the Virgin Mary was really a virgin. They told my mother that if I asked anymore questions, I’d be thrown out. That’s when I knew something was off.

I was 8yrs old for chrissakes.

Public

@Aleggra @4d3fect @krishean @chrisisgr8
Yeah, I had some god-awful (hah) experiences growing up with Christian fundamentalists myself. I've heard it said a dozen times but it bears repeating, there is no hate like Christian love

Public

@Tsutsuku @krishean @chrisisgr8 Agreed. This was more sort of a joke anyway.

Public

@Tsutsuku @krishean @chrisisgr8

No problem. Musky just discovered a new planet that supposedly has water or mud. He’s not sure, yet.

If he takes all of his fans, wives, children and mistresses with him, we might have a state about the size of Rhode Island left completely empty 😏

Public

@Aleggra @krishean @chrisisgr8
idk some of his kids don't like him very much and I don't think they should have to go if they don't want to

Public

@Tsutsuku @krishean @chrisisgr8

Didn’t think of that. But you’re right. Tusk’s kids are welcome to stay on planet earth — especially the trans one. She hates him.

Btw: what’s Musky’s deal with the letter X? He’s such a weirdo and not in a good way.

Public

@krishean @chrisisgr8 perhaps we should've gone back to Usenet

Public

@winload_exe @chrisisgr8 irc is still around, that's still an option (and always will be)

Public

Public

@kenmccann @winload_exe @chrisisgr8 oh no that brings back memories lol

Public

@winload_exe @krishean @chrisisgr8 I'm considering it.

Public

@winload_exe usenet is currently growing by about 200TB/day, it’s not completely dead

Public

@winload_exe @krishean @chrisisgr8 Usenet, IRC,and GeoCities.

Public

@krishean @chrisisgr8 I totally was shopping for a reference book this morning because I can't find anything with Google anymore.

Public

@SinbadTheSailor @krishean @chrisisgr8 What has gone wrong with Google? It's been absolutely useless lately.

Public

@TransitBiker @derickr @SinbadTheSailor @krishean @chrisisgr8 give it a whack on the side, it'll come good

Public

@derickr @SinbadTheSailor @krishean Business goals have gone wrong with google. Everything they do now is about whatever increases engagement; search doesn't have to turn up 'real' results because people will use it anyway, maybe they'll click a few pages back and see a few more ads, and maybe the content-churner sites that come up first use google's ads. Search seems to run everything through the same sort of algorithm that has youtube turning up hard right channels, incels, etc, estimating how close your query was to something they'd rather show you (something "popular" that gets a lot of engagement) instead of what you asked for. It's the same north star that guided their layoffs, the meme-tier AI shitfest at that last press conference they had, the grotesque harmony of google news with right-flavored sensationalist clickbait, etc.

The short answer for anything google does now is that if it gets a click, keeps a user on a google product for longer, or gets an extra dollar, that's why

Public

@chrisisgr8 @derickr @SinbadTheSailor @krishean Not even limited to Google, that's all of 'em.

Public

@derickr @SinbadTheSailor @krishean @chrisisgr8 I always guess it is: SEO to the point of no return, as well as the need to show ads constantly

Public

@Guildz @derickr @SinbadTheSailor @krishean @chrisisgr8 This is my bet. Low-quality websites gamed the system faster than Google could catch up.

Public

@ischrankthekids @Guildz @SinbadTheSailor @krishean @chrisisgr8 It's mostly the ads and other promoted stuff everywhere, I think.

Public

@derickr @SinbadTheSailor @krishean @chrisisgr8
The question "what has gone wrong with Google?" is an excellent question. It's the kind of question we must ask in these times. Here we will examine this question and its answers but first it's important to acknowledge what Google is. Google is a web search engine that helps to find answers. But sometimes you can't find the answers and that leads us to ask questions such as the one we that has led you here, to this page. But first...

Public

@SinbadTheSailor @krishean @chrisisgr8
You need to scroll past the first page of ads these days...

Public

@atzanteol @SinbadTheSailor @krishean @chrisisgr8 Amazon's been like that for ages of course and now ebay is going the same way.

Public

@krishean @chrisisgr8 welcome to the 1980s my friend, itll be like back to the future but ass backwards instead

Public

@krishean @chrisisgr8 Can you imagine a world without the Internet? *shudder*

(I use it too much, so don't think I'm not criticising myself.)

Public

@krishean @chrisisgr8 I swear I may even have to go outside. Brrr...

Public

@krishean @chrisisgr8 do you mean I'd have to go outside and talk to people IRL instead? I dunno seems kinda suss

Public

@chrisisgr8 too real 😭

Honestly Reddit has been the hardest one for me so far, really struggling without it today

Public

@jonoor it was definitely a good site to just open with no objective

Public

@jonoor @chrisisgr8 Lemmy have filled that gap in my life. You just need some time to build up all the communities you’re interested in. But as more and more people join it’s definitely a competent replacement for Reddit.

Public

@chrisisgr8 idk reddit, but matrix/revolt/irc/xmpp, youtube: piped, invidious, cloudtube, full alternative: odysee/ lbry, peertube,
Search: libreX or searX, windows: linux😘❤️❤️❤️

Public

@lina hm, thanks for posting some alternatives :3

Public

@lina @chrisisgr8 theres Raddle and Kbin as alternatives to Reddit, Lemmy is also posted alot but the person that made Lemmy is a tankie and pretty open about being a bigot
I haven't personally checked out Kbin but Raddle is okay, if a bit scuffed here in terms of UX and there, but still usable

Public

@chrisisgr8 feels like christmas, I mean late stage capitalism

Public

@chrisisgr8 The World Book is still in print

Public

@Topofmyvoice @chrisisgr8

I still have a set! Though it's a little dated now.

Public

@chrisisgr8 Time to go back to Web 1

Quiet public

@joyographic @chrisisgr8 I've been wanting to have a personal website again for some time now. And I'm this close to just writing the code myself.

Quiet public

@joyographic @chrisisgr8 so I'm lazy and not in the mood to get back to barebone xhtml/CSS so I'm back on a self-hosted WordPress install. Sorry to let you down...

Quiet public

@switch @chrisisgr8 If you're self-hosting you're doing better than 99% of the population. I'm making my own website too with a C++ based renderer and emscripten...

Public

@chrisisgr8 I jumped the Windows ship a long time ago and I just kinda feel bad for the folks still deep enough in denial to still be caught by it. Kinda like I feel bad for the folks who feel trapped on Twitter. 😞

EDIT: Same actually applies to Discord and now Reddit, I guess, too...

Public

@indigoparadox @chrisisgr8

Me too.... I only use Android tablets since 2011, got the #motorola XOOM (pronounces Zoom) with #Android Honeycomb OS 3

Oh wow, here comes my chance to say #backintheday when it was normal for ALL TEACHERS to only use WinPC or Mac in the CLASSROOM because the difficulty of attaching a projector, my tablet had micro HDMI out

Used a very good (expensive at the time $300) Bluetooth BOSE Soundlink speaker, draw the shades and ready to go.

OfficeSuite Pro for Android

Public

@indigoparadox @chrisisgr8 Windows 10 *LTSC* isn't all that bad. And not everyone can jump ship because of poor experience you get on Linux when it comes to hardware support and complexity troubleshooting when things don't work out of the box.

Public

@gearlicious@rubber.social @indigoparadox@mastodon.social @chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt true, for me my capture cards sound didnt work on Linux. OBS didnt show any audio source. Also my VR headset doesnt really have any Linux support. There is some open source program available but the performance while testing was always worse than my most used alternative which only works on Windows. Also some games i play simply wont work with Linux.

Public

@octofloofy @chrisisgr8 @gearlicious @indigoparadox
Jumping ships all in one go isn't a good idea either.
When I did my first steps toward Linux it was on a cheap laptop. At first just for internet stuff, then office, then programming. Later I found some games are working fine too...
Today I do everything on Linux.
