This is why I deleted my BlueSky the other day. If the question even has to be asked, then the platform is not safe
EDIT: I'm mostly worried about the Federal Nazis scraping our data. At this point I don't give a shit about Microsoft.
@Lydie Yes, it's all a bit opaque for my taste and I don't really appreciate their not so truthful claims (not to call them false) about how open and decentralized their platform is.
Their CEO is an extremely likable person and appears to be genuine, but we have been fooled in the past.
@Lydie Still describing BlueSky as "decentralised" lol
Also this still looks like it's "opt out" rather than "opt in".
You have put your finger on it...
Opt-out vs. Opt-in is a crucial distinction as 90% of users never make changes to their default settings.
@mastodonmigration @diffrentcolours @Lydie And it proves that something is not good, if you have to make it the default in order to get people to accept it. IF something is so wonderful, you wouldn't need to persuade them to opt in, they'd do it willingly.
@Lydie yes, the simple fact that a social network just has to ask consent about data usage for something other than their primary mission of sending messages to other people is a huge flashing red flag.
"but #bluesky is a public benefit corporation"
sounds great!
but that's a shallow understanding
it means a company *may* (it doesn't have to) consider motivations other than pure profit
the designation has no real bite
like a company showing rainbows during pride month, then donating to the GOP:
it's empty bullshit
when bluesky gets popular enough its #crypto bro owners will pull an elon #musk destroying #twitter routine
bluesky's future failure is baked into its foundation
@Lydie Good thing I haven't even considered opening an account there
I think anything denying plans to use your content for AI scraping is a lie. Everytime you post or download a photo it wants permissions for your entire photo library.
If they didn’t want to do have different TOS they could have kept original Twitter going instead.
@Lydie " But in general, this robots.txt file gets respected by a lot of search engines,” "
AI scraping bots are not search engines, of course, and they routinely ignore robots.txt. No doubt Graber chose her words carefully.
@cratermoon ROBOTS is NOT generally respected even by certain search engines. But definitely not by AI scrapers.
@Lydie The distinction between search engine scraper and AI scraper is shrinking. The decline of the value of letting your site be scraped is an aspect of the current #enshittification rot economy.
@Lydie I feel similarly about the Microsoft thing. I'm also going to consider calling it Poosky, from now on.
@Lydie I have an account there, but haven't really posted to it in...the last two weeks or so. I've got a lot of issues with BS in general (their moderation sucks ass), but mostly stuck around for the Black community and artists.
I'll probs hold onto it until summer, but won't be actively posting there.
