it's time to adopt a 7-point rating scale.
pros:
- more options than a 5-point scale to better reflect your opinions
- remove redundant options from a 10-point scale (what's the difference between a 2/10 and a 3/10? i also don't need to say that 100-point scales are way too much)
- odd number of points to allow an average rating
- i'm declaring right now that it has no decimal or 0 ratings (what you think might be a 10-point scale might actually turn out to be a 21-point scale if it allows a 0/10 and 0.5-increment ratings!)
- i'm also declaring that 4/7 is the average, avoiding the "7/10 = average" notion that plagues 10-point scales
- 7 is often considered a lucky number
cons:
- xkcd 927
- no one but me cares
in short, i hope i have swayed you to see the superiority of the seven scale. i suspect that shortly you shall start to use it yourself. more words that start with "s".
