I'm full of a stinker of a cold so I've not been doing to much... however just had a fun hour learning some stuff about expressions in @FreeCAD I worked out how to draw a spherically blunted tangent ogive rocket nosecone... its MUCH easier to just download the Rocket Workbench add on, but I've learnt some stuff on the way here! #Rocketry #CAD

@concretedog

Non rocket person question, so likely really basic, sorry.

Is there a reason for spherically blunting the cone? Is it for ease of making or is it a aerodynamic thing?

Public

@Emily_S so I'm no mega expert but for subsonic flight, which lots of model rocketry is, nose pressure drag is minimal so the shape choices are more about what is easiest to polish (as friction drag is an issue) also blunted can be easier to make (3d printing to a zero point can be tricksy).. they are rugged, and potentially a bit safer if they come down accidentally at ballistic speed!

@concretedog ah, ok that makes sense. I was guessing ease of 3d printing but hadn't considered safety, makes sense. Thanks

@Emily_S it also in my case.. is just what I like the look of!

@concretedog if you're going to make something you should like the look of it.
