Hiya. I'm Saqer (please use they, he is fine too). I'm an academic and a translator. Mostly translating scifi fiction and poetry (most of which I haven't published), but I toot about in my other masto spots.
I'm currently learning to use TEI-xml to transcribe manuscripts, and I'm currently horrified by XSLT.
I have been acquainted with the libre and opensource world for many years (I spent years translating apps on Launchpad back when Ubuntu was a big thing).
Github is sinking. What now? Some quick suggestions on my blog.
Move. No reason to stay.
Surveillance capitalism is the same as climate change, but for data:
- Some people have been warning about its consequences for years
- Most people don't care because they don't feel concerned, they can't see it affecting them
- A few companies are making a lot of damage with the help of governments
- When we will face the consequences it will be too late
- We can still do something about it, and the sooner the better
At this point, I no longer feel it is merely morally permissible to violate copyright, but rather one’s *moral duty* to subvert the vast majority of copyright. “Intellectual property” is a thoroughly disgusting Orwellianism.
We have entered a period where a samizdat underground is necessary to sustain the basic facets of civilization. And public education is a central pillar of the commonweal.
#Torrent every goddam thing.
Educators: If you wish to aid in the dismantling of a racist police state, you should avoid Zoom at all costs since they've made it abundantly clear they'll willingly team up with law enforcement: https://thenextweb.com/security/2020/06/03/zoom-wont-encrypt-free-calls-because-it-wants-to-comply-with-law-enforcement/
If you don't pirate your own scholarly production, then what good a scholar are you?
Re-reading Aaron Swartz's Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto after so many years: "Only those blinded by greed would refuse to let a friend make a copy."
Are you interested in a federated alternative to Goodreads that doesn't use Amazon?
because I'm making a federated alternative to Goodreads that doesn't use Amazon
it's funny how our brain goes "hey, yeah, I know you're listening to a podcast but I want to sleep so I'll just shut down for the next 20 minutes" and then when we regain consciousness and actually want to sleep because evidently we're pretty exhausted brain goes "well now I'm not doing it"
It's nice to see so many decentralized social alternatives becoming available, and people embracing them, as suitable private and free (as in freedom) tools for their daily use.
Academic/Translator. Learning to transcribe manuscripts in TEI-xml, and horrified by XSLT.
