Pinned toot

Hiya. I'm Saqer (please use they, he is fine too). I'm an academic and a translator. Mostly translating scifi fiction and poetry (most of which I haven't published), but I toot about in my other masto spots.

I'm currently learning to use TEI-xml to transcribe manuscripts, and I'm currently horrified by XSLT.

I have been acquainted with the libre and opensource world for many years (I spent years translating apps on Launchpad back when Ubuntu was a big thing).

"Police are warning students and universities not to access Sci-Hub, an "illegal website" that allows users to download scientific research papers normally locked behind expensive subscriptions."

Very bad indeed. That name again: Sci-Hub. Remember it so you can avoid it. Ahem.

So I've been testing out the Colemak and Workman keyboards. I settled on the Workman because I'm picking up pace quickly and my fingers don't feel as strained.

My learning problem still follow: I need very patient teachers who will hold my hand every step of the way and tell me to stop crying or cry with me while I learn it.

Ever since I started using for my notes (I experimented with a little but settled for Roam) and following Roam-related accounts on birdsite I started getting the feeling that maybe I should learn instead of any other language just because that lot constantly speak about Clojure. :angery:

Does anyone have recommendations for a good RSS aggregator? Both for Android and desktop. Trying to find something I either don't have to host or can self-host.

Linux: Where no one can see you crying because there are no drivers for your webcam.

I've been building a Facebook Events style event organizing system for the Fediverse. It's based on the simple, open source, privacy-respecting event organizing tool

The attached video is a work-in-progress preview and shows compatibility with Mastodon. My hope is to get it working with lots of software, including stuff like Friendica that supports events and calendars.

Also I've been considering shifting my TEI/XML transcriptions out of github given the drama and I just don't want to deal with the ethics of that place right now.

So I got around to reading boringcactus's Post-Open-source essay which was a good read. Also I really like the premise behind the Fuck Around and Find Out License.

Recs for #Pleroma apps?

I really like Tusky but there's obvious incompatibilities. I don't think I want to use Husky given their history.

Roma seems to suck even if it's more compatible with Pleroma instances.

Any other apps I'm missing?

With Nokia re-releasing 90s/00s feature-phones with the help of KaiOS (an open source derivative Mozilla's failed FireFox OS), a group has risen to break through Google's 22 million dollar endorsement to Googlefy these phones and free them properly.

Check out these weiners! Hands down the most nostalgic newer site I've seen in 10 years.
