Well, I had an inbox full of "your order has shipped" notices today. That's always encouraging. Hopefully AliExpress does that combined shipping thing, and I get it all at once.

I can't move to the Fediverse properly until I reproduce my famous pinned post from the birdsite, so here it is:

P.S.A. To all vintage computer and video game collectors:

Go through your collections and GET THE DAMN BATTERIES OUT!

Now! Don't wait! Seriously, put down the phone, go to your collection and take out all the batteries. Right now! Even if they look "okay" they are NOT SAFE after this much time.

things i have learned the hard way, #348: do not try to mount a swapfile over NFS

The Spectrum Next has many laudable features, and is of great inspiration to ÆSIR, but the best feature is, I believe, that it improves BASIC so much.

The user port for ÆSIR will use a DA15 cable like this; it will provide 8 GPIOs or one 8-bit parallel port, and a single full-duplex SPI channel.

If I end up doing an AY-3-8910 based sound card for ÆSIR, I would definitely like to include on it a slot to install a wavetable board, just because it would be awesome.

While I wait for the prototype PCBs, I'm designing the first ÆSIR user port accessory: a Bally Astrocade-inspired 4x6 keypad, with Cherry MX key switches. Why? Because it's funny.

Do I actually need ten of each ÆSIR prototype PCB? No, probably not, but the price for ten is the same as the price for five, so why not? If the prototype works, I'll have extras to send to people.

Well, the prototype PCBs and the rest have shipped. As you can see, this is about 100 PCBs (sometimes PCBWay sends me an extra one of something, I presume because there was extra room on the big board).

Played a bit with 48K Sinclair BASIC. The keyword macro buttons are, indeed, a pain in the ass, but it's still a better BASIC than that on the C64 or Apple //e.

"why do my eyes hurt?", he asks, his glasses lenses looking like a jackson pollock

Wife enjoyed those soy chunks so much that we went back and bought the store's entire stock at $1.29 a bag. Ten bags of the things.

I think I might need to open an only fans for all the naughty code I write.

While shopping for parts, I did some speculative searching for the 74HC-series logic for Harlequin 128K builds based on the BOM I got. I had no trouble finding all but one of the logic ICs.

Specifically, the 74HC366 just doesn't seem to be available on AliExpress sellers other than the "randomword17845529" sellers I refuse to buy from because if they won't put in the effort neither will I.

And that's the parts ordered for ÆSIR prototypes and stock for the Tindie store to raise more funds for tools and parts.

Speaking of, when I've stocked up and have inventory to sell, the Studio 8502 Tindie store will have SwinSID Micros, GAL PLA replacements, WME64 modems, and other stuff for you to buy.

Tried something new to me: these "soy chunks" I found in the discount rack at Food Basics. Some type of Indian import, they're dry balls of what appears to be foamed soy protein. You boil them in salted water, squeeze them out, and put them in a curry. Actually pretty good.

Random: Assuming equal voltage and capacitance ratings, is it always or only sometimes safe to replace an electrolytic capacitor with an equivalent tantalum? I honestly can't remember.

"No way to prevent this" says only nation where this regularly happens.
