Reminder using an ad blocker is self care, ads are mental abuse and no one will convince me otherwise

@konomikitten You know, everytime i hit a website that throws up a screen with "I see you are using an ad-blocker" I am just grateful that they outed themselves

Quiet public

@LiveOutLoud immediate tab close for me

@konomikitten it's emotional and psychological manipulation. it's an attack on senses. sometimes, ie gambling ads or alcohol, they're triggering people with addictions

you're absolutely right. there is no argument that corporate advertising is okay. marketing research and services are run by evil people.

Public

@konomikitten even if they weren't abusive, protecting yourself against the potential malware that can be served up from a dodgy adservice is just good sense. Imagine driving to a store and they had a poster on the door saying "please leave your car unlocked when shopping here, as we maintain our store by posting ads in your vehicle while you're here." Think ANYONE would comply with that?

Public

@konomikitten Thankfully I'm at a point in my life where my exposure to ads is near zero. uBlock Origin is installed on every browser I use. I've stopped using Big Tech platforms. If, by any chance, I have to use one of those platforms (e.g. Youtube), I'll use a frontend (e.g. Piped). ad block and sponsor skips on by default. I've never paid nor will I ever pay for a cable subscription. I've done almost everything possible to avoid exposure to ads. It's gotten to the point that the only ads that I'm exposed to are the ads played between songs that my co-worker puts on via the Youtube app. Ads are a plague on the human existence. It's forced consumerism and conformity.

Public

@konomikitten in a perfect world, online advertisement would be small, static, inoffensive PNGs not obstructing the content of the site and advertising relevant local buisnesses. f.e. I wouldn't mind such an ad from a local coffee shop. But no, it's just big companies, advertising things I don't care about and they have the audacity to animate it as annoyingly as possible.

@konomikitten@tech.lgbt also it's just good practice at this point

save your eyes and ears, install an adblocker today

@konomikitten@tech.lgbt while you're at it you could use AdNauseam to sabotage ads and give trash data to companies

@konomikitten I still remember when Forbes said let's make a deal, unblock and we'll give you less ads -- and the next screen had malware:

Still can't trust anyone using an ad network, because they (almost) all sell to each other and nobody vets everything.
