That one time I made a 40cm square 'solar system' mandala that had all the planets represented in the approximate places they were in the sky when I started drawing it. After this I did another one for a commission that had the planets as they were on a date the couple got married.

the harassment instances such as poast, nicecrew, etc are currently going through the introductions hashtag to try and find any queer people they can find to harass, as well as spamming it with their own shit.

a lot of the harassment replies /untag/ the original poster so they might not realize those are replies are there but other people looking at the post will see them.

please defederate from any such instances to keep your users safe, they're very nasty.

The fediverse has quite a few "ironic" and unironic nazi instances that are also quite racist, anti-semitic, sexist, and generally vitriolic

For most mastodon instances, this is not an issue if your admin keeps up with instance blocks to avoid federating to these instances.

However..... Enter the flagship instances, which haven't done instance blocks in a very long time. When you post to mastodon.social or mastodon.online, your posts may make it to those instances, which means if you use your legal name, real picture, or post selfies of you or generally identifying information, you could put yourself at risk just by being on the "main" instances. Worse, you won't know this is happening until they reply to you.

So be mindful about what you post. Try to approach fedi as if the bad folks could see everything you post. Consider using a different instance that stays active with blocking. Remember that fedi is a network with both the good and the bad and treat your public presence accordingly.

As one of the main Mastodon developers, I can't promise you that Mastodon will be a complete and exact Twitter replacement for you, but it may fit your use-cases, at least it does for me.

Just keep in mind that it is not exactly the same thing, some core design decisions are different (there isn't an unique centrally-governed website, but many interconnected servers operated by different individuals and organizations) and thus the tradeoffs can be different as well.

While I personally don't think Mastodon should aim at being an exact replacement to Twitter, I do hope Mastodon can be useful to more people wanting an alternative to Twitter! And I know there are lots of room for improvement, on things we do know, and on things we don't.

Also keep in mind that Mastodon is developed by only two core developers payed through a non-profit funded through sponsorship, grants and donations, so please be patient!

So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.

This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.

Welcome to all new users!

I'll try to welcome everyone on Tech.LGBT personally, but a few things:

1) @feditips has plenty of info to get you started.
2) No, everything isn't this slow all the time; the servers are just screaming a bit right now. XD
3) There are apps that let you easily manage multiple logins. I see this coming up frequently, but you can be on multiple servers. Maybe let things settle in a bit first, though. Admins here are Mom&Pop shops, not Walmart. XD
