BREAKING: In a victory to #TransRights, #SupremeCourt of #Japan reverses the judgment of the appeals court that ruled #BathroomBan legal. #BoostWelcome
This decision allows the government employee, a trans woman, to use the woman's bathroom on her office's floor. (See reply for updates.)
NHK reports that this decision is unanimous 5-0. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20230711/k10014125111000.html
"The decision of the National Personnel Agency was not based on specific circumstances ; overemphasized on other employees' concerns; neglected the trans employee's disadvantage; therefore, the decision is significantly lacking in its validity".
The decision is out. Japanese PDF: https://www.courts.go.jp/app/files/hanrei_jp/191/092191_hanrei.pdf

This is an extraordinary case, the decision shows.
The plaintiff
- has been on #HRT since 1998
- received "gender identity disorder" diagnosis in 1999
- is living as a woman since 2008
- came out to her boss in 2009
Yet she was denied access to women's bathroom - UNLESS she goes upstairs two floors.
The reason: one of her female coworker was concerned about her using women's bathroom, and she happened to use the bathroom one floor above her office.
@apple502j@tech.lgbt welcome to the NHK moment
@akariii NHK is (surprisingly) LGBTQ+-friendly; they recently aired several broadcasts on queer people's lives, both of great quality. From gender-nonconforming teens, to the Deaf gay community, to elderly trans people...
Certainly something I do not expect in other television channels here, and perhaps not in other countries.
@apple502j LET'S GO
