serious; about online trans communities

yknow, DIY HRT is not ideal but i do wish there wasn't such a culture of shaming around it in so many trans spaces

serious; about online trans communities

trying to drive it out of our spaces is not gonna make the people who do it magically have access to an endo, it's just gonna make information harder to find and in turn make it more dangerous for them

serious; about online trans communities

i _had_ to DIY for two years, and if i didn't know people who could point me to the science and information about it, it would have been *way worse* for my health

serious; about online trans communities

@allie Shaming people for that, in a world where gatekeeping gets trans people killed is some extremely messed up victim-blaming.

serious; about online trans communities

@Dolly seriously! the problem is not marginalized trans people it's the goddamn systems that make us marginalized

serious; about online trans communities

@allie Not to mention that the people doing DIY often have done significantly more research than fossilized cis dude doctors who spent all of 20 minutes learning about trans people in med school, at best. Us trans people especially should know better than to worship authorities.

serious; about online trans communities

@Dolly god yeah, love to have to explain what spironolactone is to a guy with significantly more ~official education~ on medicine than me

serious; about online trans communities

@allie this is a little bit tangential but i remember when some states were fucking around with abortion laws again, i had a tweet about how to get access to medication for an abortion safely pinned to my profile and i had way more people than i expected try to yell at me for it lmao

serious; about online trans communities

@allie let me clarify: birdsite profile. i woke up less than half an hour ago

serious; about online trans communities

@allie So much this

Like, there's plenty of countries where getting hormones prescribed takes years and is largely up to chance, if you can even get them then, and it's not like trans people magically don't exist in those, so DIY is the only option for many

Heck, even in a developed country like Finland it's a pain in the arse to get HRT, if you even can get it in the first place

serious; about online trans communities

@SigmaOne plus it's often really restrictive for minors, which is specially cruel considering the pain that is going through puberty for a lot of us

serious; about online trans communities

@allie Really restrictive is an understatement, really

Based on what I know, at least in Finland, minors just straight up can't even get HRT via official means

I can't even imagine what it's like in some country widely known as transphobic and/or conservative

serious; about online trans communities

@SigmaOne here in brazil, prescribing even blockers to a trans person under 16 is pretty much banned

re serious; about online trans communities

@allie yeah i really agree
i've mostly seen it happen in trans spaces on reddit and thankfully only a few times on fedi but it's just so messed up

like, I've been doing diy hrt for quite a while and it has made me feel so much better on average... yeah, it sucks that there's so much gatekeeping and lots of medical "professionals" don't even know what they're doing, so why would one gatekeep it even more??

re serious; about online trans communities

@AgathaSorceress yeah. it seriously saved me.
and yeah! our goal should be to smash the gates in anyway we can, not make 50% of the gatekeepers trans people

re serious; about online trans communities

@allie of course it's possible to do it wrong but doesn't that apply to just about every single kind of medication?
it just feels like the privileged kind of trans people who got their hrt without many obstacles thinking that everyone is able to do it like that too

i've seen people get literally death threats from other trans people just because they're doing diy hrt and it's honestly so wrong

re serious; about online trans communities

@AgathaSorceress also, it's significantly easier to do it wrong if all the information has been driven out by people who want us to follow standards that were not made for or by us

re serious; about online trans communities

@allie yeah exactly
if anything, it should only be more accessible and not less

re serious; about online trans communities

@allie @AgathaSorceress and even with gatekeepers and doctors, when there is no information available, you won't even know that your doctor says bullshit

re serious; about online trans communities

@allie hearing stuff like
"oh you don't want to go through 2 years of real life experience in a transphobic country and go through tons of legal gatekeeping? just go to planned parenthood lol"
always makes me so upset

re serious; about online trans communities

@AgathaSorceress middle class trans americans stop thinking your experience is universal challenge

re serious; about online trans communities

@allie @AgathaSorceress are these the ones who are constantly horny and eating pickles?

re serious; about online trans communities

@AgathaSorceress i'm like... very paranoid about medical stuff so i hyperfocus-read papers for like three weeks before trying to get hormones from planned parenthood and tbh what they recommended was like 40y out of date from contemporary understandings of the best approach to treatment. i am privileged, i'm on my 3rd endo now and he's relatively reasonable, but i still have to do an independent literature review every time i want to adjust my medication

re serious; about online trans communities

@AgathaSorceress point being that the state of professional competence in endocrinology wrt trans issues, even among people who supposedly are appropriately trained in it or specialize in it, is really fucking bad. there's a lot of damage one could do w/ DIY if approached improperly and even the worst-case professional scenarios tend to be *ineffectual* as opposed to harmful but that's bad enough for something so fundamental

re serious; about online trans communities

@AgathaSorceress so like, i tend to avoid recommending that people DIY just because I don't trust myself to help them do so responsibly, but it's not like the state of the field is so far beyond what people can learn on their own time that it's impossible to do so effectively. tbh the best medical assistance most people can hope for is someone who will just prevent them from seriously fucking up in some edge-case way, it's basically just DIY with help

re serious; about online trans communities

@AgathaSorceress but yeah hrt good and the degree to which it helps far outweighs the relatively minor risks of like... any reasonable approach that you'd get from even cursory review of the literature

doctors, re: serious, about online trans communities

@AgathaSorceress @allie Also, surprise, official endocrinologists can do it wrong as well!

And sometimes they might just randomly without any reason deny someone the HRT one officially got before

re serious; about online trans communities

@AgathaSorceress @allie my only real obstacle was moving 5Mm away and saying I'd been self medding for half a year after my first therapist couldn't do shit, prolly having been her second or third trans patient at most. small town conservative america yay..

re serious; about online trans communities

@AgathaSorceress @allie gosh, it took me a year and a half to find a competent doctor

because somehow "i shot past puberty and went right into menopause" or, "i wet the bed from sweat every night" was somehow really confusing to two doctors, one of whom has a Prof title and teaches Trans shit at the University

serious; about online trans communities

@allie People do that? 0_o

serious; about online trans communities

@allie (I mean, of course they do I guess. But it hadn’t occurred to me)

serious; about online trans communities

@ghost_bird yep. i've gotten a Totally Polite Talk On Why You Shouldn't Do It ™️ about it on a lot of discord servers

serious; about online trans communities

@allie :-/

re: serious; about online trans communities

@allie I hardly know a trans person on HRT who hasn't DIY'd some aspect of it before. People self-medicate all the time for all kinds of reasons but when we do it it's somehow way worse. I don't think DIY is ever worse than not having HRT at all when you need it, and it's such a huge privilege to think there aren't a huge number of trans people with absolutely no access to proper medical care.

serious; about online trans communities

@allie had a friend DIY, it worked for her mostly. (only downside was her boobs didn't grow much, but that was probably genetic/poor nutritirion)

re: serious; about online trans communities

@allie pretty much the only thing an actual doctor can provide that DIYers can't is blood tests. all the knowledge on best treatments is available. and while yeah, getting your levels checked is important, and you probably shouldn't do oral e if you have liver problems, a lot of it can just be best-guessed 99% of the time
