good moment to remind you that if you're on Android and using mastodon app, consider switching to megalodon or moshidon
trust me, there's no downsides

I'll say this here because i think the intent was not clear, i mentioned those two in particular because they are forks, and therefore have the same look and feel as the official app, while just being better
there are many other great apps for android, and you may find suggestions on this comment section too!

Public

@agatha especially if your instance doesn't use vanilla mastodon!

the official mastodon app won't recognize a lot of customization of your instance

Public

@deilann oh yeah, it can do akkoma stuff too

Public

@agatha last time i dared to touch the thing, it thought we had default character limit

it's bad at even just basic changes

Public

@deilann that's why it suggests dot social
cause it doesn't work properly on other instances lol

Public

@agatha the official reason was retention which i believe

well, retention wasn't the word

but to smooth the onboarding process

deconfusify it

because any person who considers joining a mastodon instance and then doesn't is lost growth

growth growth growth

gotta grow if you wanna replace twitter

Public
@agatha people who use the mastodon app are either masochists, or they don't know megalodon exists
Public

@dav1d the second most likely

Public

@dav1d @agatha

megalodon has its quirks like suggesting snowdin yas to me over living yas in autocomplete

but with every update and planned feature i am more and more disturbed by the route the android app is taking

Public
@deilann @agatha megalodon crashes for me sometimes when I try and type emojis, or when searching someone. Its still the best app I know of though, unless moshidon has fixed those issues? Havnt used moshidon though
Public

@dav1d @deilann it has on my experiences:>

Public

@agatha @dav1d

here's a question though

even if it was an accident - like you didn't realize at first it was old

was it wrong?

if you had something to say

why shouldn't it be said?

Public
@deilann @agatha not sure what u mean
Public

@dav1d @agatha

everytime i have replied to something not realizing it was over 3 months old, i'd still have replied if i'd realized

the "current conversation" is a fiction and doesn't matter

Public
@agatha @deilann downloading rn
Public
@agatha @deilann I miss pink shark already
Public

@dav1d @deilann unfortunately you do lose the pretty shark icon

Public

@dav1d @agatha

specifically the super patronizing route over actual community management like warning people posts are more than 3 months old because that's "usually an accident" -

i wanna know how they determined those metrics because if that's not something they made up, it's a bit disturbing they're doing analytics like that

Public

@agatha adding Tusky to the list

Public

@noiob tusky is completely different, i was suggesting direct replacements, but sure absolutely give tusky a try!

Public

@agatha oh, are those forks of the official app? Tusky does orient itself pretty closely to the interface (or the way that it was when it first came out, the multi-column view is really hidden away these days)

Public

@noiob yeah, megalodon is the fork, moshidon is the fork's fork

Public

@agatha I do like that they named it after a shark

Public

@agatha whats the consensus on tusky?

Public

@guites i didn't mentioned tusky because those two are forks of the official app, tusky is a different app completely
i would try all and see which one you prefer, they're all valid options

Public

@guites@bolha.us @agatha@tech.lgbt a friend of mine strongly recommended tusky, so I never used the official one for more than a few days. but I recall finding tusky slightly better and still use it.

Public

@agatha using phanpy.social/ as an installed web app on Android works really well for me

phanpy.socialPhanpyMinimalistic opinionated Mastodon web client
Public

@agatha
Fedilab is also quite good!

Public

@agatha@tech.lgbt I agree. moshidon is a very good app

Public

@agatha For those on iOS, Feditext is awesome

Public

@agatha Also, back when I joined fedi it was pretty much consensus that the Mastodon official apps sucked? Why’re people using it now?

Public

@luana I'm just targetting new users

Public

@agatha thanks for the callout

Quiet public

@agatha@tech.lgbt Fedilab has a couple more features iirc but it's also less user-friendly so I wouldn't recomment it to everyone
