@SiteRelEnby I wonder how long it will take for Enshittification to reach a critical mass and collapse on itself this can't be sustainable

Public

@SiteRelEnby hmm it seems to be organized differently on the French interface…

Public

@SiteRelEnby also I didn't find these in the pro account. But maybe they'll appear later on?

Public

@mmu_man @SiteRelEnby GDPR may not allow them to do it opt-out. LinkedIn also rolled something similar a while ago, but Europeans were not affected

Public

@mmu_man @SiteRelEnby New Zealand located here, and I see no such options either. There is no 'manage shared info' for me.

(as an aside SiteRelEnby, I love your Picrew avvy, and I have one from the same generator!)

Public

@koz @SiteRelEnby possibly they haven't rolled this out everywhere yet.

Public

@SiteRelEnby Why does it feel like every American company in existence has decided to attempt to roll out policies that flagrantly violate GDPR?

Public

@SiteRelEnby @sleepyfox Doesn’t seem to be an issue in the UK (presumably due to GDPR) but indicative of what the company would do if it could.

@SiteRelEnby
Australian, can't see it, but was a chance to clear some sharing that I no longer consent to.

Public

@SiteRelEnby thank you. I rarely use PayPal, but I opted out for sure.

Quiet public

@SiteRelEnby
AFAIK this doesn't apply to EU customers, because ... law.
@Missingnickname

Quiet public

@jnfingerle @SiteRelEnby I just checked, there were two options for personalized ads that I switched off now. Not exactly as described in the post, but still, better to be rid of them...

Public

@SiteRelEnby thank you for the heads up on this!

Public

@SiteRelEnby I don't see a 'Manage shared info' tab at all. I've turned off both options under 'interest based marketing'.All cookies except 'Essential' are already off. Can't see anything else that might be relevant.

Public

@SiteRelEnby Thanks for forwarding this.

Just FYI for anybody in Canada, the settings path appears slightly different:

Settings
> Data & Privacy
> PayPal Shopping

The description of the toggle is "Personalize deals and offers based on your browsing and shopping activity", which sounds similar but might not be the same thing.

Probably worth turning off anyway, though.

Public

@DaleHagglund @SiteRelEnby it's not under this nor that either. It's nowhere for me and I'm in North America.

Are they trying to prevent a mass opt out?

Public

@n @SiteRelEnby Good question. I certainly wouldn't put it past them to obscure the option. A slightly less nefarious explanation would be a staged rollout of some sort, I guess?

Public

@SiteRelEnby i just boycott any business that uses paypal, unless another payment method is offerred. Just try to delete an account with thar enshitified corporation.

Public

@rhymerepartee

Sadly I have to use it because it's the de facto standard in several of my hobbies both for buying from companies (also arguably the safest way to buy from China in terms of buyer protection) and for peer to peer trades/services.

Public

@SiteRelEnby@tech.lgbt If you are a EU Citizen: Laws work and you don't have to do shit cause Paypal is not allowed to opt you into such things.

Public

@SiteRelEnby@tech.lgbt

Additional: looks like this affects non-GDPR nations only. I (UK) checked both app and website and don't even have a
Manage Shared Info option.

Public

@SiteRelEnby [tech.lgbt] #PayPal has been officially passing on all available user data to hundreds of companies for a long time. Much of it for purposes such as marketing and PR.
Here is a ‘beautiful’ visualisation: rebecca-ricks.com/paypal-data/ #HowPayPalSharesYourData

All of this is based on PayPal's official list [www.paypal.com], which also shows the scope of the data.

What the opt-out is all about is probably only the choice of whether the user receives personalised recommendations, not whether data is given to merchants. This has been happening for a very long time or right from the start and is the basis of paypal's business model.

Public
@SiteRelEnby looks like this is either only in the US, or only in the US "for now". Not seeing the option myself.
