A guide to changing clocks this weekend ⌚

Public

@Natasha_Jay It's the Where Is My Oven Instruction Manual So I can Figure Out the Clock time again!

Public

@vwdasher @Natasha_Jay

Be careful, I accidentally turned on Sabbath mode on the stove. No lights worked, the burners were disabled and the oven warmed up without registering.
Only hint was 5A6 in place of the clock.

Was funny afterwards since we are Jewish, just not observant.

Quiet public

@nerb

It's not truly Sabbath mode unless you feel Paranoid while it's active ...

@vwdasher @Natasha_Jay

Public

@nerb
As someone who's not familiar with the Sabbath customs, could you explain why it did what it did?
@vwdasher @Natasha_Jay

Public

@flesh @vwdasher @Natasha_Jay

Observant Jews are not supposed to work on the Sabbath. They employ various work arounds to function . The oven can be kept warm and food placed inside it before Sabbath to avoid cooking. But no displays or lights are used and it will not auto shutoff or allow temperature change . My daughters family does that and more.

Her secular daddy does not.
So I was puzzled when my stove started acting up and was displaying 5A5 on the clock. Chuckled when I found it in the manual.

STAR-K Kosher Certification · Sabbath Mode and Sabbath Compliant Appliances | STAR-K Kosher CertificationUpdated January 2023 Appliance manufacturers, with the aid of modern technology, have designed kitchen appliances to be safer and more efficient while incorporating various features to enhance operation. However, the integration of this technology may pose a challenge to their proper use on Shabbos and Yom Tov. THE INTRODUCTION OF SABBATH MODE In 1997, a historic technological project was launched between a major appliance manufacturer and a kosher certification agency. Whirlpool Corporation (manufacturer of KitchenAid) approached STAR-K to help modify their ovens for use on Shabbos and Yom Tov. Prior to that time, many of their appliances did not conform to halachic guidelines. Following some adjustments, a successful mode was developed. Whirlpool called this “Sabbath Mode” and was awarded a patent in 1998 for this concept. STAR-K kosher certification on appliances falls into one of two categories: 1. Sabbath Mode Appliances – these are models that have unique software/hardware specifically [...]

@nerb
Ah, that makes sense, I was wondering why the oven would turn on.
Thank you for the explanation.
@vwdasher @Natasha_Jay

Public

@vwdasher @Natasha_Jay I need mum for the oven. Idk why but she knows how to set the clock on it. She needs help finding the X button on a browser to turn it off, but she sets the damned oven clock in under ten seconds and I can't for the life of me replicate that.

Car radio will rearrange itself when coming into contact with a phone. Which will happen about right before it needs to be set back to original, because I don't usually turn the electronics on in it...

Public

@Natasha_Jay I usually leave the car on summer time for the year. Trouble is, occasionally it goes to the garage in winter and they reset the clock.

Quiet public

@TimWardCam @Natasha_Jay

This, I hate it.

It yearly inspection is in January, so it happens every year.

Maybe I should just leave it on winter time? It's just that summer time is 7 month so it makes more sense to leave it at that.

Quiet public

@FanCityKnits @Natasha_Jay The big problem is that I usually leave it on summer time, so I'm used to where I should be at each hour on our regular winter trip, so I get very confused if the garage has reset the clock so it looks like we're in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Public

@Natasha_Jay I've worked out the car clock but it doesn't change the clock in the Sat Nav.....I can arrive somewhere before I've left home.

Public

@drmobs @Natasha_Jay if your sat nav is able to accurately show your location it theoretically knows the correct time from GPS but I have seen at least one inbuilt car navigation system which in spite of receiving a perfectly accurate time synchronization from GPS ignores it in favour of its own system time for anything else except doing the math necessary for GPS triangulation

Public

@addressforbots @Natasha_Jay ...or the sat nav doesn't believe in daylight saving time changes.

Public

@drmobs @Natasha_Jay honestly I barely even believe in daylight savings and wouldn't bother with it at all if it wasn't written into law. Daylight savings is one of those things that kind of made sense a hundred plus years ago but now does more harm than good and is only still practiced because governments and standard organizations can't be bothered to specifically repeal it

Public

@addressforbots @drmobs @Natasha_Jay GPS gives you a very precise time, but it knows nothing about time zones

Quiet public

@Natasha_Jay
Wait... Are you telling me that the changing clocks directives all those years weren't about throwing away my clock and buying a new one?

Quiet public

@jlperuyero @Natasha_Jay You should have two identical ones, one summer and one winter clock.

Quiet public

@Zimme83 @Natasha_Jay
Oh, that definitely makes sense. This way I could choose a winter watch with a warm and cozy strap, I really should've figured that 😆😂🤣

Quiet public

@jlperuyero @Natasha_Jay

Thus is what happens when you ask Alexa how to change the clocks, right?

Quiet public

@CrypticMirror @Natasha_Jay
Could be, don't know. My wife's name is Ann and her answer was "you do it by yourself, I have better things to do".

Quiet public

@jlperuyero @CrypticMirror @Natasha_Jay Ann, you say. Ann....Droid? 🤔

Quiet public

@Crow @CrypticMirror @Natasha_Jay
Oooh, you got me. But she's not like the mind in Spike Jonze's "Her" or Joi in Villeneuve's "Blade Runner 2049". More kind of a blend of M4r1a in Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" and Ava in Alex Garland's "Ex Machina".

Quiet public
Public

@Natasha_Jay seems I'm not the only one who leaves the car on UTC!

Quiet public

@sheddi @Natasha_Jay

Leaving things on GPS time doesn't confuse the septics enough — leap-seconds are useful.

Public

@Natasha_Jay The sundial autoadjusts in realtime.

That clock sitting in the corner of one room though... Well I'll get to it someday...

Public

@Natasha_Jay For the oven I find cutting the power to your entire kitchen at 11:59 and restoring it at exactly 12:00 works great.

Public

@ruari @Natasha_Jay
Ah, the US model.

For the EU model, you'll want to do it an hour before midnight (as the official time doesn't change until a few hours after midnight.

Public

@leeloo Actually my oven shows a 24 hour clock but defaults to 12 midday on power cut. Weird but that's what it does.

In any case the advice still works so long as you pick the correct time and know which hour it will default too.

@Natasha_Jay

Public

@leeloo @ruari @Natasha_Jay

02:00, officially. (This moose no longer has to stay up late to issue the "T Clock=00" (or 01) command.)

3:O)>

As for other clocks at Chez Moose, they're either locked to MSF (or get their reference from GPS), or things that have to be either set manually or stay on Zulu time.

(If I was using the "Signal Centre" clock, I'd have to open the front cover and move the red "Local Time" ring forward or back.)

Quiet public

@ruari @Natasha_Jay

How are you doing with your watch collection? 😬

Public

@Natasha_Jay Fun fact in some locations your car radio might set its own clock
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Da
(note that while it is supported by the RDS spec I've never personally seen a radio station that actually bothers to broadcast RDS time)

en.wikipedia.orgRadio Data System - Wikipedia
Quiet public

@addressforbots @Natasha_Jay Mine tracks UTC nicely, which is great!

However, twice a year I have to dig through the menus to manually switch DST on or off.

Public

@addressforbots @Natasha_Jay
I have. The radio stations usually got around to updating the RDS clock within 24 hours after the change.

Public

@Natasha_Jay Old school bike computers: where are those damn manuals, this is HIGH STAKES in case I wipe the odometer..!

Public

@Natasha_Jay
I have an electric car to which I connect my phone everyday so I can listen to music, radio or GPS etc.
It still doesn't change the car clock.

Public

@Natasha_Jay don't forget, we have a Dark Moon this weekend so make sure your crystals are fully charged beneath it in order to perform the Arcane Magick of Changing Clocks!

Public

@Natasha_Jay Note: "Oven" also applies to the micro wave variant.

Public

@WhyNotZoidberg @Natasha_Jay

I used to have to go next door and change the time on their central heating programmer. (It doesn't actually _need_ a Sysprog to do that, but elderly (and non-technical) neighbours...) 3:O)>

Public

@Natasha_Jay i consider sundials references for correct-ish time and won’t touch them

Quiet public

@Natasha_Jay car clock: just wait six months! We do that.

Public

@Natasha_Jay Move to Western Australia. We solved this problem across the whole state in one fell swoop!

Quiet public

@Natasha_Jay oven is: don't bother, it will always show the time since last fuse blown/power fluctuation anyways.

Public

@Natasha_Jay
No clock in the oven. Not sure about my car radio, if it has one, I never have it set to show time anyway. The clock on the dash, on the other hand, is the good old 1991 Toyota clock with two buttons, labelled H and M. Just hold the H button until it shows the correct time

My alarm clock is usually the one causing the most confusion, but so far I have succeded setting it without digging out the manual.

Public

@Natasha_Jay what would moving the sundial to the side do?

Public

@anselmschueler @Natasha_Jay Nothing. The earth is flat! 😂

#flatearth 👍

Public

@dj_cthulhu @Natasha_Jay It's not but it still doesn't do anything because the earth is almost flat at the scale of one neighborhood, and because the sun is so far away its rays are almost parallel, right?

Public

@anselmschueler @Natasha_Jay Wrong. The lid of your habitat is only a few hundred of your kilometers above the floor. The lighting cycle is remotely controlled and optimised for certain organisms.

Maybe it's time to check the mechanisms and clean out the environmental chamber. 🤔

If I remember after my nap. 🥱

Public

@Natasha_Jay central heating controls

Quiet public

@Natasha_Jay a friend today realised their clock in their car was off by an hour, so they updated the clock to DST. The thing is, we go back to regular time next weekend, essentially ensuring the car will only have the correct time on the clock for 7.5 days in the year since DST started.

I honestly love that. It's chaotic good energy. Taking 6 months to notice a problem that has minor to no implications, and fixing it then and there even though the problem would have resolved itself in just over a week

Public

@Natasha_Jay @regendans my old car 'radio' is only used as amplifier. Connected via modern bluetooth 'mouse' to my smartphone for internet music. 😇

Public

@Natasha_Jay My car has two separate clocks, one on the central touch screen (relatively easy to change aside from the crappy and unresponsive "touch" screen) and another on the driver's dash display which has to be updated via a very obscure and complex menu and steering column buttons process that I have to look up in the manual every six months. 😞 It makes changing the clock on my microwave look simple in comparison. 😡

My previous car had no clock, I preferred that as DST was no problem and I wear a watch.

Public
Public

@Natasha_Jay luckily I do have a masters in Electronics, so I'll be fine.

Apart from the car radio. No one understands those.

Public

@Natasha_Jay
My first car was French, and setting the clock was weird. You do nothing to advance from hours to minutes.

Now I have another French car, where changing the time is done by navigating trough the radio menu with up/down buttons and changing the time is left/right. BOTH IN BOTH DIRECTIONS! IN 2012! :🤯

Public

@Natasha_Jay My dumb car stereo has DST option that I flip and it changes the time (or I could just change it manually as it's super easy to change). The oven is also very easy to setup, made by Electrolux. Koreans and Swedes know how to make things simple from my experience.

Public

@Natasha_Jay The sundial shows the correct time.
