We figured out the greenhouse effect closer to the start of the Industrial Revolution than to today

@Natasha_Jay To be fair, it took 50 more years, and probing the upper atmosphere in the 1930s, for the science on it to get settled.

So we were aware of it since the late 19th century, but only figured it out by 1950s.

If only we took action in the 50s instead of waiting until… still waiting.

🤬🤬🤬

@deinol @theartlav @Natasha_Jay but it would hurt profits... :( 🥺

Public

@deinol @theartlav @Natasha_Jay At this rate it is going to take another 128 years to do anything about it.

@Pepperbike
But we are doing something.

We are digging up and burning all the fossil fuel, so there won't be any left to burn, when we finally get around to banning fossil fuels in 128 years time.

There was action, for different reasons perhaps, various Clean Air Acts from the mid 50's onward, increasing use of smokeless fuels, the switch from generated coal gas to mined methane probably increased the amount of emissions and nuclear somewhat reduced them.

But the significant change since the 18th century is the global population. Almost regardless of how we improve the use of the carbon cycle unless population falls it will be pointless.

@theartlav It's our duty to be vigilant against existential threats (insofar as anything is).

@becha @Natasha_Jay Lovely backstool she sits on there.

That explains A LOT about why guys try so hard to ignore the facts on climate catastrophe ...

@becha @Natasha_Jay A huge environmental footeprint.

@Natasha_Jay Arrhenius thought it was great because it could be good for Swedish farming. Idiot.

@Natasha_Jay Eunice Foote deserves long overdue credit for her research on the greenhouse gas warming effect.

Public

@Natasha_Jay Please don't wake the sheeple.

Public

@Natasha_Jay the sad truth that this speaks is, that it's of little use if one or even a hundred scientists publish their findings... You need to convince a critical mass of people that it's something that needs to be actioned on to claim that "we figured it out" (as a species)

@Natasha_Jay @inthehands

In 1824, Joseph Fourier described the greenhouse effect (following some preliminary work before that).
In 1856, Eunice Foote measured greenhouse warming by CO2.
In 1896, Arvid Högbom estimated CO2 released by burning fossil fuels and Svante Arrhenius worked out the detailed radiation balance.

Just over 200 years of climate science.

It’s not a joke. It’s true!
