#PrideMonth is a rough time for me. I know I belong in the #LGBTQ+ community, it's inclusive for all, but I've experienced a lot of Asian hate/racism from within the community in the past. It *should* be better now since there's more awareness of Anti-Asian hate, but Pride Month triggers past trauma and it's hard to let it go.
When I came out to my friends, I lost most of them. Afterwards, I tried using gay apps to connect with people. The amount of fetishization that happened from within, not to mention descriptions of "no femmes, fats, or asians", I grew incredibly depressed. I hated my body and my ethnicity. It wasn't until I met my amazing partner that he pulled me out of self-deprecation and helped me raise my self-esteem/self-worth. I started embracing my ethnicity, personality, and differences. I'm much happier now.
I want to remind people to be open. Racism/prejudice/hate can come from places one might not expect. You never know what experiences one has been through either.
@FalconMarkSix it’s good to remind “the majority” that things aren’t always so great for some. As a cis white gay, I try to be aware of that, but I’m sure I miss stuff.
And here’s to partners/friends who make one a better person by supporting you through tough times. I hate to think where I would be without my husband.
@NightFlyer Definitely. That's why I wrote this post. For many Pride Month is a celebration. For others Pride is a protest. And for some Pride may be a time where they may feel unwelcome or lonely.
After I lost many friends, I just had two left. I make sure to tell them what they mean to me and how much I appreciate them. For people experiencing any sort of hate/prejudice who might not even have a single person, we need to be open and really listen to their needs when they do try to reach out either online or offline.
@FalconMarkSix Thanks for sharing this.
@PlinyTheOlder Thanks for taking the time to read it
@FalconMarkSix hugs! Thanks for sharing your journey. So glad to hear you’re in a better place now and have a partner that supports you.
@FalconMarkSix as a straight, white, European guy I have nothing to compare this to, but loneliness and isolation suck and I'm sorry you lived through this.
