Should classic books have elements removed/changed to fit modern sensibilities?

No but I would be happy to take a leisurely stroll through a series of collation volumes of all the excerpts which people have wanted removed from anything. (Sounds like a project!)
@CriticalCupcake No. Because they're art and culture of their time and should be treated as such.
You can share that the work has different, considered outdated ideas of morality, rights, language etc.
That's not to say modern interpretation cannot be done but the original works should be kept and preserved as they're part of our history and cultural evolution
@CriticalCupcake I don’t think that they “should” but it’s long been a common practice. Enid Blyton novels, for example, have had revisions with almost every new edition to reflect more modern attitudes.
In a Famous Five book I had in my childhood, there was a black character called JoJo who was a very racist caricature. I think it’s now a guy called Joe and I’m not sure his ethnicity is even mentioned (if I’ve been informed correctly, that is, I’ve not seen it myself).
No, they were of their time.
@CriticalCupcake
Should we also take a hammer and chisel to monuments addressing sentiments from another era?
